I had the chance to swing a leg over the new Overland Expo Foundation Ultimate Build Suzuki V-Strom 800DE, and I’ll cut to the chase—this bike is a surprising blend of refinement and ruggedness that punches above its weight in the adventure touring category and the Overland Expo Foundation Build modifications make it a perfect round-the-world touring motorcycle.

The 776cc parallel twin has a deep, confident growl from the moment you fire it up. On the pavement, it’s smooth and composed, with a planted feel through corners that inspires confidence. While the Vstrom is not a speed demon, it has plenty of power for loaded touring. The 800DE is no slouch off-road either. The OEM Showa suspension, with nearly nine inches of travel, soaks up washboard gravel and small whoops without complaint. It’s not a full-blown dirt bike, but it doesn’t pretend to be—it’s a true ADV machine designed for long miles, loaded gear, and the occasional detour into the unknown.
