The DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ is a BEAST of an Overland Refrigerator

When it comes to overland refrigerators, the DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ is a formidable choice that has gained a reputation for its exceptional performance and versatility. In this review, we will delve into the features and capabilities of the DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ refrigerator, exploring why it is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts and overlanders but why we ultimately went with a different brand for our overland fridge.

Design and Build Quality

The DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ features a robust and durable construction, built to withstand the rigors of off-grid adventures. It boasts reinforced corners, stainless steel hinges, and sturdy latches that ensure long-lasting durability. The rugged design allows it to handle rough terrains, vibrations, and even heavy loads without compromising its functionality.

After 2-3 uses, the compressor in one of the sides of our Dometic gave up and died. This was disappointing as we were a couple of days into a 10-day Utah trip, but we made do with just using one side of the fridge. Dometic customer service sent us a replacement that beat us home. Customer service is extremely important when it comes to a purchase like this and Dometic knocked it out of the park. Our replacement fridge worked great for the two years that we owned it and is still working for the current owner as far as we know.

Dual-Zone Compartment

One of the standout features of the DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ is its dual-zone compartment, which provides the flexibility to set independent temperatures for cooling and freezing. With a total capacity of 94 liters (101 quarts), the fridge can accommodate a substantial amount of food and beverages. The dual-zone configuration allows users to simultaneously store perishable items and frozen goods without the need for additional coolers.

While we thought we would really use the dual zone functionality more, the reality is that it takes up a lot of usable space inside the fridge and we never even tried to have ice cream in the freezer side. While the dual control is a nice feature, it wasn’t something that we needed.

Cooling Performance

The CFX3 95DZ utilizes a relatively efficient compressor cooling system that can rapidly cool down to -22°C (-7.6°F). It also features powerful insulation, reinforced with CFX3 special ExoFrame construction, which helps maintain consistent temperatures even in hot weather conditions. The unit also comes with three-stage dynamic battery protection to prevent any risk of draining the vehicle’s battery.

The cooling performance of the 95DZ is undeniable, but it comes at the cost of battery storage which we will discuss further down.

Advanced Features and Controls

This DOMETIC refrigerator is equipped with a range of advanced features for user convenience. The integrated digital display and control panel allow users to monitor and adjust the temperature settings easily. Additionally, the CFX3 app enables wireless connectivity, allowing you to control and monitor the refrigerator from your smartphone. The app provides real-time temperature information, and power status, and even offers the option to adjust settings remotely.

Energy Efficiency

The DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ incorporates thoughtful design elements to enhance usability. The lid can be opened from either side, providing easy access to the contents, while the removable baskets and dividers allow for efficient organization. The baskets were fine and on par with every other fridge at this price point. The lid CAN open from either side, but not interchangeably like the ICECO fridge. You have to choose one side or the other on the Dometic.

I am sure the 95DZ is efficient considering its size, but we found the size to be way too much power draw for our measly electrical system. Our 95ah AGM house battery STRUGGLED to keep up with this fridge during our testing and use. Had we upgraded to a lithium battery, we likely would have been fine, but the big dual zone from Dometic draws some serious juice. In our testing, we found that it drew around 2 amp/hours per hour which doesn’t seem like a lot, but adds up.

Portability and Ease of Use

Despite its generous capacity, the DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ remains relatively compact and lightweight for its class. The ergonomic handles on both sides make it easy to transport, and the robust latches ensure a secure seal during travel. The refrigerator also features a USB port for charging small electronic devices, adding to its practicality during outdoor adventures.

The 95DZ was relatively easy to load and unload with only one person, empty. As soon as you fill it with food and drinks it goes from 65 lbs to over 100 in a hurry. The electronics and controls of the CFX3 line are likely my favorite aspect of using the fridge. The Dometic phone application is very handy when you are on the road and don’t want to stop and check on the fridge or when you are in the tent and don’t want to get out. Changes can be made on the phone and instantly occur on the fridge.

While there are a ton of reasons that someone might enjoy the CFX3 95DZ from Dometic, it wasn’t the right fridge for us. The performance was great, but the footprint and power draw were not as appealing. Obviously, we bought this fridge to live in a skoolie conversion full-time, a job that it likely would have done really well. For a truck fridge or overland build, I find it to be too big and too power-hungry for extended use. If Dometic were to offer a CFX3 in the 60-65L range, we would have bought another without question.

The DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ refrigerator undoubtedly lives up to its reputation as a top-tier overland refrigerator. With its dual-zone capabilities, exceptional cooling performance, advanced features, and sturdy construction, it offers a reliable and versatile solution for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re embarking on an extended camping trip, off-grid adventure, or a weekend getaway, the DOMETIC CFX3 95DZ is an investment that will ensure your food and beverages remain fresh, chilled, and easily accessible throughout your journey.
