Gear Review: AluCab 3R Roof Top Tent

The AluCab 3R Roof Top Tent is a premium offering for overlanding enthusiasts and campers seeking durability, functionality, and comfort. As a high-end tent with an aluminum frame and durable construction, it stands out in the market for those who require a rugged solution to handle tough off-road conditions and aren’t afraid of buying once and coincidently, crying once. Here’s a breakdown of its strengths and weaknesses that we have discovered after several trips with the 3R Roof Top Tent.

Build Quality

The tent is constructed with robust aluminum, which ensures excellent strength, stability, and longevity. The hard-shell design offers great protection against the elements and is particularly suited for extreme weather conditions. AluCab is known for developing tents with tough materials, and the 3R doesn’t disappoint. The shell of the 3R Roof Top Tent is rugged and held up well to many nights of rain and a few brushes with low-hanging branches.

The build quality on the inside of the tent is high-quality. The inner lining is soft and looks excellent. The velcro attachment at the base of the tent was a little wonky, but most tents have this same challenge.

The tent is highly weather-resistant, with a waterproof rainfly and solid protection against wind and dust. Its aerodynamic design also helps reduce wind resistance while driving, which is a bonus for fuel efficiency. The tent performs well in both wet and dry climates, making it versatile for different terrains.

Ease of Setup

One of the biggest advantages of the AluCab 3R is its easy setup. The tent is designed for quick deployment, making it ideal for overlanders who move frequently. The gas-assisted struts allow the tent to pop open smoothly within only a couple of minutes, a major plus compared to soft-shell or more complex tents.

During our use, the tent setup took only 30 seconds. With all of the flies and windows opened up, setup only took 5 minutes. Tear down was around the same time and we were able to pack up the mattress and all pillows and bedding without storing anything inside the vehicle.

Space and Comfort

The interior of the tent is well thought out, providing enough room for two adults to sleep comfortably. The hinge design allows for more space at the foot of the tent, giving it a more spacious feel compared to traditional rooftop tents. The mattress is comfortable and of high quality, although some users may want to add a mattress topper for extra cushioning.

At 6’3″ tall, I was able to fully extend and sleep comfortably without angling diagonally. The AluCab 3R is a tent suitable for taller travelers.

Ventilation and Insulation

The tent offers excellent ventilation, with multiple windows that can be opened for airflow. It is well-insulated, making it suitable for both hot and cold weather conditions. However, for very cold environments, additional insulation or heating solutions may be necessary. The upper vent hole is especially handy at keeping condensation at a minimum while maintaining a cozy tent.

During our time with the tent, we experienced temperatures ranging from 32-95 degrees Fahrenheit and the tent was comfortable throughout. Obviously, at either end of the spectrum, a small 12V fan or a diesel heater would have been nice to have.

Pros of the AluCab 3R Roof Top Tent

  • Durable aluminum construction makes it ideal for extreme environments.
  • Quick and easy setup with gas struts.
  • Spacious interior with comfortable sleeping area.
  • Excellent weather protection, including waterproof materials.
  • Great ventilation with several windows.
  • Built-in features like LED lighting and accessory mounting options.

Cons of the AluCab 3R Roof Top Tent

  • Price: The AluCab 3R is on the expensive side, making it less accessible for casual campers or those on a tight budget.
  • Weight: Being a hard-shell aluminum tent, it’s heavier than soft-shell alternatives, which could be a consideration depending on your vehicle’s roof load limits.
  • Some users may find the included mattress a bit firm and may want to add additional padding for comfort.

The AluCab 3R Roof Top Tent is a top-tier product that excels in durability, ease of use, and weather protection. It’s best suited for serious overlanders who need a reliable tent that can withstand tough environments and frequent travel. While the price point may be high, the quality and longevity it offers make it a worthy investment for those who prioritize durability and convenience. We have several friends with AluCab products that they have owned and used heavily for many years with not trouble. If you’re looking for a tent that combines ruggedness with comfort and ease of use, the AluCab 3R is hard to beat.
